Gate Buying Guide

How to start:

Where will your gate go?

  • The location of your gate affects its size, style, and material.
    • Example: A tall wooden gate might suit side access, while a shorter, decorative gate works well for a front garden.
  • Replacing an existing gate?
    • You’ll need to match the size to fit between the current posts.
      • Always measure the gap, then the gate. This is because the original gate may not be the correct gate for the size.
    • Our Stock gates measure 6ft High x 75cm, 90cm, 105cm, 120cm or 135cm Wide.
  • Starting from scratch or moving posts?
    • You can choose from the full range of sizes to more suit your needs.
  • Before you buy:
    • Measure the gap where the gate will go.
    • Leave space for posts and fittings.
    • Standard entry/path gates are about 90cm (3 feet) wide.
    • Consider height and ground clearance so the gate opens smoothly.

Choosing the right gate starts with thinking about what you need it for.

If it’s marking the boundary of your property and you want to keep kids and pets safe while adding privacy, a tall, solid wooden gate could be a great choice. Whatever your style or purpose, our guide is here to help you find the perfect gate for your home.

How to measure for a wooden gate:

Step 1: Measure the width

  • Measure the full opening top, middle, and bottom.
  • Use the smallest of these three measurements.
  • This will be your overall opening width.

Step 2: Measure the height

  • Decide how tall you want your gate to be.
  • Measure from the ground to the required height.
  • This will be your overall height.

Step 3: Choosing the correct size Gate Posts

  • Selecting the post's width
    • For light gates: Use posts that are at least 100mm square.
    • For heavy gates: Use a minimum of 150mm thick post, for double gates or driveway gates, use a minimum thickness of 200mm.
  • Selecting the post's Length
    • A minimum of 900mm (about 3 feet) in the ground is recommended for gate posts.
    • Add 900mm to the overall height measurement.
    • If attaching a post to a fixed object, you do not need to have 3 feet in the ground.

Step 4: Account for obstructions and ground slope

  • Use a spirit level to check if the ground is level.
  • If the ground is sloped, you may need to adjust the gate design or install a sloped bottom edge.
  • Check for any obstructions that could interfere with the gate's operation, such as overhanging branches or uneven ground.

Step 5: Subtract for hardware and expansion

  • To confirm your physical gate width
    • We recommend subtracting 10mm for hinges and a further 10mm for a latch. This allows for expansion and contraction.
    • Deduct the chosen widths of your gate posts.
    • Your final size will be your physical gate width.
  • To confirm your physical gate height
    • We recommend subtracting 10mm for the floor. This allows for expansion and contraction.
    • If the gate is enclosed at the top, we also recommend subtracting 10mm. This allows for expansion and contraction.
    • Your final size will be your physical gate height.
